Royal Copenhagen Blue Flower Plain (Braided)

Made since 1780

Blue Flower Braided (Plain) is a porcelain coffee, tea and dinner service. The service was designed in the late 1770's and about 100 years later it was re-designed by Arnold Krog, Artistic Manager of the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory.

Blue Flower is available in two different shapes: curved and braided. The Rococo shapes, curved and braided (with basket weave), are from around 1780. Curved has the play of movement which is typical of the Rococo. The shape curves and the flowers are arranged asymmetrically. On Blue Flower braided or osier as it was originally called, the blue flowers are framed by a relief border in basket weave and the lids are topped with large tulip buds.

The bouquets consist of one or two large and some smaller flowers. The main flower might be a tulip, rose, poppy, carnation, convolvulus, or marguerite. The smaller ones are usually cinquefoil, bluebell or primula together with leaves and buds. The decoration on curved is slightly different as the bouquet is tied with a loose bow.

It takes a light hand and a dexterous brush stroke to create the spontaneous freshness which has been the mark of the Danish porcelain pattern Blue Flower since the late 1700s. Through the ages this Danish bouquet has been used on many different shapes of service and on many different items. In the early years, for example, it was used extensively on writing sets and flowerpots.

Blue Flower is painted completely by hand, and right from the outset the decoration had a freshness and grace that was lacking in similar European blue porcelain painting in the 18th century. To this day the technique and the hand painting remain the same, although the decoration has undergone some inevitable changes, as it is human beings that paint flowers on the porcelain each day, and true to tradition the porcelain painter has the artistic freedom to put together the bouquet as she wishes. That is why you will never find two exactly the same.
